How to do it

  1. Stand with the balls of both feet on the edge of a step, holding a rail.
  2. Rise onto your toes with both feet.
  3. Lift one foot and lower the heel of the other slowly, over 3–4 seconds, below the step.
  4. Put the other foot back down and rise again on both. Do 10–15 reps, then a set with the knee bent.

Tips

  • Up on two, down on one.
  • Some ache in the tendon is OK if it has settled by the next morning; sharp pain is not.

Common mistakes

  • ✗ Dropping the heel fast instead of lowering it.

Why it hurts: The tendon gets a sudden stretch under full body weight, which can flare up Achilles pain instead of strengthening the tendon.

✓ Instead: Lower over 3–4 seconds, rise on both feet, and add a backpack only when 15 slow reps are easy.

  • ✗ Pushing through sharp pain.

Why it hurts: A mild ache is part of tendon loading, but sharp or worsening pain means the tendon is being overloaded.

✓ Instead: Keep the pain at 3/10 or less and settled by the next morning; if not, reduce the depth or do it on flat ground first.
