How to do it

  1. Sit with your feet flat on the floor.
  2. Spread all your toes as wide as you can without lifting them, and hold for 5 seconds.
  3. Then squeeze them together and hold for 5 seconds.
  4. Repeat 10 times. For more, loop a light band around the toes.

Tips

  • Keep the toes on the floor: spread them, don't lift them.
  • If the little toes barely move, that is fine. They get better with practice.

Common mistakes

  • ✗ Curling or clawing the toes to lift the arch.

Why it hurts: The long toe flexors take over, so the small arch muscles you are trying to train stay asleep, and the toes can cramp.

✓ Instead: Keep the toes long and relaxed and slide the ball of the foot toward the heel instead. A smaller movement done right is the goal.

  • ✗ Rolling the foot onto its outer edge to make the arch look higher.

Why it hurts: That is the ankle supinating, not the arch working; the big toe loses contact and the foot learns the wrong pattern for push-off.

✓ Instead: Keep the base of the big toe pressed down the whole time. Check with a finger under it.
