How to do it

  1. Stand in front of a flat bench holding a dumbbell in each hand at your sides, feet shoulder-width apart.
  2. Push your hips back and bend your knees to sit down until you lightly touch the bench.
  3. Keep your chest up and back flat.
  4. Drive through your feet to stand back up.

Tips

  • Touch the bench lightly; do not relax onto it.
  • Keep your knees in line with your toes.

Common mistakes

  • ✗ Dropping onto the box.

Why it hurts: The spine is compressed between the bar and the box, a real risk for the lower back.

✓ Instead: Sit back under control, touch the box lightly, then drive up.

  • ✗ Relaxing completely on the box and rocking to get up.

Why it hurts: Losing the brace mid-rep lets the spine round when you try to stand.

✓ Instead: Stay tight while seated: brace, keep the shins vertical and stand straight up.
