Front sculling

Small figure-of-eight hand movements with the arms in front. Sculling teaches the feel for the water that every catch is built on.

Dose
4 × 25 m
Rest
20 s

How to do it

  1. Float face down with the arms in front, elbows slightly bent, a pull buoy between the thighs if you have one.
  2. Sweep the hands out and in, a little wider than the shoulders, turning the palms to press water on both sweeps.
  3. Keep the movement small and quick; you should move slowly forward.

Tips

  • Move from the forearm and wrist, not the shoulder.
  • Breathe by lifting the chin just enough, or use a snorkel.
